From a quick look, the two engines make a MASSIVE difference in performance. I know we have a great jet in Gripen, but Gripen will have it's butt kicked by this machine in close combat...

Shooo  very impressive =D> =D>
In a possible war scenario the enemy is surely not going to ask if you have a comparable aircraft before they attack, are they? [-X
I'm sure that the Rafale outclasses the Gripen by a factor or two, but it does that at a price in both dollars and man-hours. So we have what we have because that is what we could afford
Just hope we are never up against such an aircraft in combat [-o<

I think the Gripen has the edge over the Rafale, except in payload and combat radius. The Gripen will be more agile in a dogfight, lower wing loading and the Rafale with it's 2 engines might be a pig to fly. Gripen top end higher, turnaround times quicker and of course a better datalink. Rafale probably makes a better bomber. Rafale is obviously the better carrier aircraft and that is why it's so heavy and has 2 engines. Gripen has smaller profile and thus harder to detect. Price is probably the biggest difference.

It is going to be who has the better pilots, in my opinion.
