The strop used by the SAAF to suspend the Bambi Buckets is shorter than that used by the Hueys. This is because the FE can call out the heights when picking up water ... most of the time! A shorter strop also aids in a more accurrate drop.
From 6 to 19 January, 22 Squadron dropped a total of 1,389 buckets of water, thats 2 778 000 litres.
Well done SAAF pilots.
.this little lower than normal incident does not way off all the times it was done perfect!!..remember that it takes a toll on pilots concentration when fire bombing all day..just flying a helicopter takes more concentration that an aeroplane on its own,let alone performing fire bombing with a bambi bucket 100's of times.
