ZS-HMY was one of the first choppers the SAPolice obtained, it first flew under the command & control of the old Security Branch before being taken over by the Airwing.

With the SB it was silver and blue if memory serves correctly

You guys here about it. 7 KIA, 2 Pilots and 5 NIU members.Hectic stuff, eyewitness say that the pilot tried to manuever away from an informal settlement before crashing, they also said that a policemans was crawling away when is ammunition in his chest webbing went off. So sad and unnessecary.

A tragic loss.

But this...

...seems like rubbish to me. The only feasable cause of ammo exploding in webbing is heat, so his webbing would have to be on fire and it would have to be a fairly hot fire at that. There was no sign of fire at all in any of pictures or tv I've seen and crawling would put out such a fire anyway.

Part from a media statement of SAPS: "At this stage, speculation is that the huge midst within the vicinity of the area might have led to the cause of this accident. Upon crashing, the helicopter caught fire all seven members were burnt to death."

I lost 3 mates in that crash. RIP Koos, "Kraai" and Thinus.

The wreckage didn't look burnt on tv news, what a horrible way to meet your end!
If bad mist played a part I wonder if they hit something (tree/powerline/etc) or maybe it could have been dynamic rollover if they landed on sloped ground.

What a coincident. This reply is on the same date accept it is two years later.
Wasn’t it maybe a BK 117?
Quote:
MBB BK 117 (ZS-HSE) 9 FEBRUARY 1991
On 8 February 1991 ZS-HSE went to Appingendam training Centre 45km north-west of Potgietersrus on a VIP flight, with Maj-General Stemmet, Maj-General Grobler, Mr. du Toit (Public Works Department) and their wives as passengers.
On 9 February 1991 at approximately 09h30, while still at Appingendam, the pilot Maj. M.D. McGee was tasked to carry out a photo sortie, as aerial photo’s were needed for the compiling of maps of the area as well as an aid to be used in future for possible expansions and improvements of the base.
Maj. Mcgee took off with L/Sgt. G.F. Wessels (video camera), L/Sgt. C.Z.J. Minnaar (hand camera), L/Sgt. P.A. Swanepoel, L/Sgt. J.A. Wessels and Miss T. Kotze as passengers.
During take off a turbine failure occurred on the right engine of the helicopter. The helicopter capsized to the starboard side and flew into the ground. After the helicopter had hit the ground, it caught fire and burnt out, except for the tail section which had broken off during impact.
Maj. McGee and Miss Kotze were killed in the accident.

Some other accidents.

Quote:
PILATUS PORTER PC - 6 (ZS-NIU) 13 SEPTEMBER 1994

On 13 September 1994 Pilatus PC-6 (ZS-NIU) was used during a stock-theft operation between Mmabatho and Nietverdiend.
Warrant-Officer S. Khan was the pilot, with L/Sgt. G. Conradie as crew member, while Col. O.G. van Schalkwyk, Reservist Const. J. Visser, Reservist Const. W.J.M. Marais, a Corporal of the local Commando and the Commander of the Jagersfontein area accompanied them as passengers.
At approximately 12h45 while landing in a cross wind at the Klippan airstrip on the farm of Mr. J.H. du Preez, the aircraft twice wielded to the left, where after the port wing lifted and caused the starboard wing to hit ‘n pole next to the runway. This resulted in the aircraft to wield severely to the starboard side, spin around, hit a light delivery truck which was parked next to the runway with it’s port wing and then came to a stand still. Nobody was injured during the accident.
Although the aircraft was damaged to such an extent that it was considered as a write off, Huntng Aviation notified the Police that they could repair the aircraft. Within eight months Hunting Aviation restored the aircraft to it’s former glory at an cost of R1 544 566-39. This project saved the SAPS an estimated R3,4 million as Hunting Aviation repaired the aircraft for 30% of the amount, which a new aircraft would have cost the SAPS to replace the Porter.

MBB BO 105 (ZS-HNY) 25 DECEMBER 1995

On 25 December 1995 Inspector A.D. Parker (Pilot) and Sgt. J.C. Thackeray as crew member were tasked to fly a crime prevention sortie on the tourist routes and resorts between Umtata, via coffee Bay to Mkambati resort and back. They were accompanied by Superintendent D.Z. Sgotyana and Capt. J.A. Joubert.
At approximately 14h30 the took off from Umnagazi river, Bungalow Resort, where the had lunch.
After take off Inspector Parker flew in a northern direction along the Umnagazi river to gain some altitude and then turned in a southerly direction. However, whilst levelling out the tail rotor struck the water, causing the helicopter to spin out of control and crashed on a sand bank near the river mouth. Everyone on board was injured and were treated locally by a doctor, after which they were taken to the St Mary’s Hospital in Umtata.
The helicopter was a complete write off.

BEECH SUPER KING AIR (ZS-LNV) 10 MAY 1997

On 10 May 1997 the Police King Air, ZS-LNV flew to Steynsburg in the Karoo to enable five forensic experts and detectives to conduct an investigation of suspected arson, as the Grand Hotel at the town was destroyed by fire. The same afternoon they were finished with their investigation.
At approximately 17h00 they took off again from Steynsburg with Supt. B. Nordon and Supt. P.G. Jooste as the pilots.
During the take off run the aircraft hit a dip, which caused the one propeller to slice into a sandbank, causing the aircraft to lose power. Due to the loss of power the aircraft was unable to take off at the end of the runway, veered to the port side, bounced off three farm fences, crossed over a dirt road, ploughed into the veld.
Only Supt. Nordon was injured slightly and was released from hospital after being treated. The aircraft was however severely damaged and was considered a write off.

MBB BO 105 (ZS-HRF) 31 MAY 1997

On 31 May 1997 Capt. A.D. Parker and Inspector J.J. Botha were responding to a call for assistance from a Police highway patrol vehicle, which was chasing a suspect in a stolen vehicle near Heidelberg.
During the chase the helicopter however struck power lines fell to the ground, skidded for approximately 100 meters and came to a standstill alongside the median barrier,
Both of occupants were seriously injured and airlifted to hospital but miraculously survived the ordeal. The helicopter was a write off.

This is a very rare photo of ZS-HMJ. This was the only "kortgat" in the SAPS. On a 1:32 scale it is 8 mm shorter than the CBS model. The CB model doesn’t have the small window at the back, which means modelers don't have to lengthen the base and add the window. Image
