Hello again - I'm in the process of putting together a completely new model of the P-40E Kittyhawk Mk.Ia for CFS3, and I'm doing a number of aircraft for the Mediterranean. I've got Piet Van Schalkwyk's "Colours and Markings" issue on the Kittyhawk, and a few other sources, so I'm fine for 2 Sqn and 4 Sqn, but for some reason, there don't seem to be any photos anywhere of a Mk.I Kittyhawk from 5 Sqn. Tomahawks and Mk.III Kittyhawks, yes, but no Mk.Is. So if anyone can help, I'd be very grateful. Squadron codes are GL.

If you're surprised to see CFS3 in the desert, you're well behind the times! If anyone's interested, let me know and I'll point you in the right direction.

Since we had published the original book on the P-40 we have received actual artwork on a pilot's logbook cover to confirm that the colours on the Wing Emblem was actually in Green and Yellow. The Africa map was in green paint, with the yellow border to it and the springbok as depicted. We had verbal information of these colours for some time, but has only received the actual confirmation artwork in the last six months. The emblem were also done in other colours, but the official colours were as described above.

I hope this will assist you in changing the emblem on your P-40 to the correct colours. We will be doing an update article at some future date with a few corrections and additions to the original work of the old book.

Thanks for letting me know - I'd seen MAV decals had done a scheme with a green map of Africa, but I chose to ignore it! It'll be a matter of minutes to change this, so the release version will be right.

Coming back to 5 Sqn though, I can find photos of Tomahawks, Kittyhawks III and IV and Mustangs, but nothing at all showing a Kittyhawk I. Any suggestions? I really want to bring out one aircraft for each squadron which flew them in the Desert. I've got the RAF and RAAF covered, and there's just this thing with 5 Sqn SAAF...



And not only in the Desert!
