I'm having difficulty to land the Gripen smoothly, without bouncing. The cause of a bounce is probably because the rate of decent is too high. So im either bouncing it, or overshooting the initial position I wanted too touch down at by means of floating. So just wanted to find out from you guys what your landing configuration is at round about for a nice and smooth landing ? Such as :

-Speeds at which the flaps are selected.
-Landing speed for 100% fuel load and 1 drop tank.
-Angle of attack during decent.

Im currently selecting first flaps at 200knots, then at 140knots and after that maintain 120-130knots while the angle of attack is usually between a 0-5 positive , closing the throttle right before touch down, but not so that I just fall onto the ground. Doesnt seem to work though.

Thanks!

Hardus Boouse, at UVSAAF is the king of Gripen landings - his landing rates are all under -100fps, and hold the record with -2fps. See it here: http://www.uvsaaf.fsworld.co.za/index.p ... ndings/200

I will ask him to answer you here if possible :smt023

Hardus se reply:

Quote:
hi Johan

I can agree with hardus to a certain extent - don't close the throttle to idle. I do land with full flaps though - Gripen uses "flaps" though - it is automated - the elevons (Elevators / ailerons combination.

I usewd to close the throttle to idle, because you land "normal" aircraft like that. I find that my rate of descent is what it is at the moment before touch down - I just keep pulling on the stick to do a very slow flare.

I have make one thing clear though. The Alphasim Gripen's bouncing is way too sensitive. If you look at real Gripen landings, which I do a lot because I make the DVDs of airshows, those guys hit the runway hard - no bounce. The sim is like a baloon though, I won't worry about it too much, but something that IS cool though, is to get it right. You must practise and do what works for you. My attitude with full elevons is almost tail-scraping, so be carefull. I do have to say that I touchdown at around 100 knots.

Hope this helps.

Here is a Youtube clip of my flying.

I talked to Blokkies quite a bt at AAD, and sounds like the real Gripen is a dream to fly.

We have to worry about stalling her in FS, she doesn't in real life - the FCS (Flight control System) won't let the aircraft go outside the flight envelope.

And as I expected - he went over 9G in places. shhhh ;)

Thanks for the trouble Jakes! Il try it and see how it goes, 150 knots sounds a lot!

I agree with rynopot, the Gripen is really "bounce sensitive", almost like it has too much lift or something.
