I went to my well worn copy of Steenkamp & Potgieter's Aircraft of the South African Air Force, but the badge has changed since 1980. Back then it was on a black shield with the motto scroll below the shield. When did the change to a blue circle happen?

Hi Jake
Those levers/control sticks are only present in the WSO's "cabin". It is used to control the FLIR/sight and to launch/fire the weapons.
While the pilot has some capability to control/fire some of the weapons it is mostly the WSO/Navigator that does the weapons control.

Just one more thing on those control sticks, Jakes!
Originally, the Rooivalk was suppose to be equipped, and able to fire, the ZT-3/ZT-35 (Ingwe) ATM. This missile is not a fire-and-forget missile. The missile has to be "flown" or controlled onto the target. The control sticks were used for this purpose.
I'm sure that these are used for much the same purpose in the current Rooivalk, although the Makopa/ZT6 missile does not require manual control after it has been launched. The sight still has to be controlled and missiles or weapons must be selected and fired. I know for a fact that the 20-mil cannon and the Makopa seeker can be "slaved" to the sight and target tracking can be manual or automatic. The sight can be "locked-on" to a target and the missile seeker or the cannon, slaved to the sight, will track that target as long as the target stays with-in the limitations of the selected weapon.
